Middlesex Girls U18s- 50 vs Berkshire U18 Girls - 0. Sunday 12.01.2025

The Enfield Tigers were well represented by four players in the Middlesex U18s side, namely Eliza Sibley, Selma Tivnann, Emily Mann and Rene Sonubi, which carried too many guns for their Berkshire counterparts at Grasshoppers RFC on Sunday 12 January.

Grasshoppers’ 4G pitch enabled the game to beat the big freeze, and a Middlesex side, also comprising two of our friends from Old Grammarians, Tilly Harris and Izi Kennedy, never looked back after weathering some fierce early Berkshire pressure.

After Grace Hunter and Carey Taylor had crossed (Layla Campbell converted both) for Middlesex, Eliza Sibley, having initially made her mark with some memorable defensive hits, also showed her attacking prowess by forcing her way over from close range.

The Enfield Tigers ‘connection’ was again in evidence as Selma Tivnann proved a lively presence at fullback. Instrumental in sparking a number of dangerous Middlesex attacks, she, too dotted, down having run-in from halfway after fielding a Berkshire defensive kick and ghosting her way past a number of defenders.

Middlesex continued to ratchet up the pressure and the fresh legs of two wingers, including the Tigers’ Emily Mann, who linked well with Sophia Grilli, on the half hour minute mark, further discomforted a Berkshire side which conceded twice before the interval as a result of Megan Fullam and Derika Stirling’s efforts.

Not that Middlesex had it all their own way. As Berkshire camped close to the line as the half drew to a close, but a huge Middlesex defensive set enabled them to keep their line intact.

The second-half inevitably saw the introduction of the finishers, which, amongst others, took the form of the Tigers’ Rene Sonubi (second row) plus the OGs’ duo, Izi Kennedy and Tilly Harris. All made telling contributions, with Rene’s support play and telling 20m break, among the highlights.

Hannah Jacques’ went over for Middlesex’s seventh and, although they had a subsequent try chalked off for a forward pass after an excellent build up, they finished with aplomb after the tireless Sophia Grilli enabled the blue and white hoops to reach the half century mark.

The Enfield Tigers’ and Middlesex coach Tom Mann said: “[It was] a great performance from the Middlesex team who played at a fast tempo and kept the ball for long periods, applying pressure on a resilient and hard-tackling Berkshire side who played their full part in an exciting and well officiated game. A big thanks goes to Grasshoppers RUFC for the use of their pitches, and the officiating trio who did a great job of making this a fair, safe and enjoyable game.”
