THE U16S DELIGHT AND FRUSTRATE IN EQUAL MEASURE
The U16s made a good start their Herts-Middlesex Division Four campaign despite not quite firing on all cylinders, although a comprehensive 38-14 win over Barnet Elizabethans B certainly signalled their intent for the rest of the campaign (Oct 6), writes Jonathan Landi.
The rampant hosts set off at a rate of knots and, although they occasionally went off script, they had matters much pretty much sewn up at half-time, having rocketed their way into a 28-0 half-time lead.
Coach Andy Corgan was in the invidious position of being able to rotate his squad in the second period but, despite the introduction of fresh legs, Ignatians found themselves dragged into a far more even contest, having become frustratingly penalty prone, with both sides claiming two tries apiece after the interval.
However, Ignatians’ six try extravaganza at Donkey Lane enabled them to secure all five league points, with the try scorers proving to be the very tonic fullback, Philip, who claimed a hat-trick, with James, Jayden and Cinar all claiming a touchdown each
Ben provided the icing on the cake by rifling over four conversions.
Oscar, variously deployed at scrum-half and outside centre, was the Ignatians’ coaches Man of the Match, whereas the Barnet coaching team signalled out Jayden for special praise.
Head coach Andy Corgan opined that his side delivered a mixed bag: “It was good return points wise but we were too ill-disciplined in the second-half when we conceded far too many penalties. Still, a win's a win."
