Many thanks to Chris from Verulamians and Clint from Watford for bringing their sides to Enfield and contributing to a thoroughly entertaining morning of rugby. The sun was shining, the kids were having a ball and the spectators were treated to some fantastic rugby during which all the sides demonstrated great attacking flair and some dogged and aggressive defensive skills.
Enfield started with a tough opening game against Verulamians and whilst they showed plenty of endeavour and heart, our defensive efforts couldn’t contain the opposition and our passing wasn’t quite good enough to convert scoring opportunities into points. However, it wasn’t all doom and gloom by any account with Austin Lutwyche having a storming game in attack, ably supported by Louis Sellick and Anthony Corbett.
The second game against the Barbarians side was closer, although ultimately a loose defensive was our undoing as too many tackles were either far too high or were simply missed. We improved in the second half as the tackling dropped below the waist, with Louis Sellick and Austin Lutwyche in particular hitting some cracking tackles, but it was too little too late by way of turning the result around although a breakaway try by Austin and two opportunistic tries from Max Getling, who was a constant threat around the fringes of the breakdown, got us on the scoreboard.
So overall, how are we doing? Well, we are still moving in the right direction, and frustratingly we are close to moving up to the next level, but until our passing game improves to the levels we achieve during our training sessions and the defensive line holds strong for the whole game, we’re always going to make it difficult for ourselves.
We rucked and mauled well with Elliott Ullah, Liam Devane, Myles Powell and Nathan Clifford protecting their own ball well and often winning turnover ball. We are always a threat with the ball in our hands with Oliver Bourton and Joe Sear beating players every time they have the ball. We have showed improved ball presentation skills with William Gallo and Sid Galvan consistently taking the ball into contact and then offloading or presenting it for recycling. But, we need to do all these things for a whole game….so watch out Tabard….!!
