Ignatians Tame the Stags in Second-Half Tour de Force

Shaun Engelbrecht: The South African was one of a number of players to excel in the hard arena of Stevenage. His 18th appearance of the season, in all competitions, was crowned with his third try of the season.

Enfield Ignatians' final away league fixture of the season eventually ended in a convincing 32-0 win over doomed Stevenage Town, although the win came at a price after the first-half red-carding of Cypriot lock Frank Stavrou, and injuries to Middlesex A players Tom Moore and Jordan Wilson, in a feisty and niggly encounter which mirrored the previous clash between the sides in December.

Despite having a lot of the play going downhill, Ignatians failed to capitalise and will have been disappointed after gathering a modest 3-0 half-time lead via the boot of Jordan Wilson. The half-back also hooked another kick wide as the visitors' game literally became too hit and miss.

Coach Emile Hertz summed up: "It was really a question of missed opportunities. We created lots of chances but were guilty of forcing the issue, and popping the ball too much out of the tackle, when we would have been better off holding on to the ball. Although some credit must go the opposition as they didn't let us play."

Knowing they were up against it in the second-half, Ignatians came out firing and showed what they were capable of by running in five tries without reply. Profiting from Stevenage ill-discipline, Ignatians drilled the ball to the corner and, from a well-worked rolling maul, hooker Tom Killey stormed over.

The third try was engineered in similar fashion, although, on this occasion, it was South African blindside flanker, Shaun Engelbrecht, who was on hand to supply the necessary additional firepower by forcing over his way over.

Otherwise, the blue and golds successfully deferred to the rapier-like qualities of the backline, and, in between the two forward-orientated scores, Tan Mbonu, showing the versatility exhibited in the Nigerians Development game by prospering at centre, finished off a slick backline move.

Dan Savagar successfully executed try number four. Pleasingly, in a move instigated by player-coach Emile Hertz, and carried on by Wes Warren, who successfully replaced Tom Moore, the ball travelled through several pairs of hands before the winger made the most of the space.

Ignatians had one more trick up their sleeve and a deft cross-field kick from fly-half Sam Clark became a foot-race between Dannan O'Meachair and Tan Mbonu, which, on this occasion, went the way of the former. Two successful Jordan Wilson conversions completed the rout.

Coach Emile Hertz, who replaced the injured Wilson with 15 minutes to go, added: "I can't pretend to be pleased with the sending-off, although the player concerned (Frank Stavrou) charged straight in from ten yards to help out a team-mate who was set upon by two opposition players and lying on the ground."

"The referee is entitled to take the view that Frank Stavrou took the law into his own hands. On the other hand it doesn't seem fair that the Stevenage players escaped censure and got away Scot-free, although I gather that the official didn't see the original incident.

"The Stevenage side we played was much better than the one in December and I must confess to being worried at half-time. However, against the odds and the elements, the side showed a steely side to its character, and it was very much a mental victory as we played with 14 men for 55 minutes.

"To his credit, Frank [Stavrou] did later apologise to the referee and I thought he had a good game until that point. I thought a number of players showed up well including Jack Stockman who acquitted himself well at prop before being replaced by Ken Carroll on 65 minutes.

"As regards the injuries we will have to wait and see although I gather that Tom Moore has hurt his knee."

Ignatians entertain the league champions North Walsham in their penultimate home fixture on Saturday.
