More Weddings and a Funeral - Glyn Jones (Honorary Chairman) - President's Lunch Programme 4th October 2008
Another Summer has passed and we look forwards to a new season, but before I do just a few comments about what happened since the end of last season apart from the sun not shining. It was the Summer of Club Members getting married, too many to mention them all, there were more Stag Weekends than a herd of deer on a Short Break. There are some people who spent the whole Summer on Stag Weekends and looked forward to the rugby season for some well earned rest. Congratulations to all those who tied the knot and in particular the Club Captain Doddie Wyer who married Laura. Happiness unfortunately comes hand in hand with sadness and the Summer saw the passing away of Brian 'Taffy' Harris after a long fight against cancer. Taffy will be long remembered by those who knew him and for his hard work for the Club as Secretary. His funeral in Wales was well attended and included a number of Club Members who helped lay Taffy to rest.
Now looking forward, this season throws up new challenges and opportunities for the Club. The First XV is playing in a new League, London North East 3. Although we have been there before and would have preferred to stay in the NW League, it gives us an opportunity to show the strength of the Club to new opposition, and unfortunately increase our carbon footprint due the additional of travelling required. However, our opponents today, Brentwood, are old friends and we welcome their players and Members. Our other three Senior Teams will also face a challenge on improving on last season's performance when the Second and Third XVs won the top two Merit Tables and the Fourth XV finished second in their merit Table. A tough act to follow but with new Captains for all Teams and an influx of young new blood from last season's Colts Team it looks like another opportunity to show the depth of strength within the Club. The Youth Section also continues to grow from strength to strength with more young people finding that Rugby offers more that other sports.
The new season also brings a new sponsor, Inn on the Green, as the new main sponsor of the Senior section, and the logo of the popular Palmers Green watering hole now features prominently on the club's shirts. Inn On The Green will also sponsor the Player of the Month award. We are lucky in that Inn on The Green, run by Hugh and Anne Fallon, is a pub with a big rugby tradition and the Fallons are passionate Munster fans.
